The windows operating system is kept up to date with “automatic updates”.

This windows feature downloads and installs the updates automatically, without user intervention and the user might not even be aware of it. It uses client bandwidth without their knowledge. This feature can be de-activated to save bandwidth.

Steps to disable windows updates:

Windows XP:

Step 1: right click “My Computer” & select properties

Step 2: select “Automatic Updates” tab

Step 3: select “disable”

Windows Vista:

Step 1: right click “My Computer” & select properties

Step 2: select “Windows Updates” on the left hand side

Step 3: select “change setting”

Step 4: select “Never check for updates”
